Guest Post: You might be unorganized if...

Since I am by all obvious reasons, A very Organized Person... I sometimes forget what it feels like to be unorganized.  I recently had the oppertunity to work with Laurie as she reviewed our Virtual Organizing Services and her witty comments on what might make you disorganized just had to be shared!  I asked her to write today's post because I am sure that many of you can relate, so without further ado...

You Might Be Unorganized If....

Organization, now there's a funny word. As a matter of fact, I pretty much laugh anytime I hear it spoken. I haven't been "organized" since well, I can't even think back that far.

I recently looked around my house and decided to put down in writing a few of the ways to know if you might be disorganized. Here are the things to look for.:

  • If your couch seats four and you can only seat one from all the clutter, you might be disorganized.

  • If you are pulling newborn size clothes out of your six year old's closet, you might be disorganized.

  • If your silverware drawer is beginning to fear being taken over by your junk drawers, you might be disorganized.

  • If your kitchen counter-tops are longing to see the light of day, you might be disorganized.

  • If you filed something in your "To Do" folder in 1999 and you just completed it in 2010, you might be disorganized.

  • If you have your garage door open and your neighbor says, "Hey, I didn't realize you were moving?", you might be disorganized.

  • If the piles of paper on your desk look more like reams of paper, you might be disorganized.

  • If your kitchen cabinets need to be marked with yellow caution tape, you might be disorganized.

And my personal favorite...

  • If your child dumps all his toys out of his toybin and says, "Look mommy, now my room looks like your office," you might be disorganized.

If you read any of these and thought, " Oh my goodness, that is definitely me," then call for back-up! It is never to late to start to organize your life. I know for me, it reduces my stress levels so much to accomplish even the smallest of tasks when it comes to organization.

There will be a Twitter party on May 5th from 8:30-9:30pm EST. #GetOrganized. If you would like to learn tips and ideas on getting organized, this is the place to be! RSVP today by going to:

My latest Project

One of my biggest organizational challenges in my home has been my four year old's bedroom because it was in serious need of some added storage.  I designed a custom built unit for her room and began planning for the project weekend... anxious to transform her space.

Before the Project Started...

I made a list of all of the categories of her toys that I would need
fabric storage cubes for so that I could purchase the
right number before the project started.

I went shopping for fabric storage cubes on a budget. I was finding them for around $3.99-$6.99 online and at local stores; however, I knew that I needed 15 or more cubes so I wanted find something a little more budget friendly.  I can not tell you how excited I was when I found all of these cubes and baskets at... THE DOLLAR TREE!!!!  That is right I got all of this for only $18.00!!!!

Project Day

We got started by clearing EVERYTHING out of the room.  I took all of the toys and boxed them up and moved out the other furniture so we could get the unit built.

After they were built:

I moved the bed back into the room and began sorting all of her toys into the different cubes and baskets while also purging out old toys, books, and other items that we not going back into the space.   I bagged up four trashbags of things to donate from her room.

Putting it all together

My daughter LOVES her new space and so do I!!!  She has been doing a wonderful job of only getting one cube out a time and clean up has been a breeze.

Celebrate Earth Day by Reducing Junk Mail

Tomorrow is Earth Day and if you are looking for a way to celebrate the day and make a positive impact on our planet, allow me to suggest an easy task for you to complete.

Many aspects of getting organized can help you be more environmentaly friendly but this one is something that you can complete today and make a big difference for the earth and your home.

The task is to Stop your Junk Mail!

Did you Know???
  • • 62 Billion pieces of junk mail are created and sent out each year.

    • Each year more than 100 million trees are destroyed to create all of the junk mail that clutters countertops all across the world.

    • 44% of all junk mail goes into the landfills of the world without ever being opened or read.

    • To transport and deliver junk mail each year costs an average of $550 million and sends massive amounts of auto emissions into the atmosphere.

    • The average American spends more than 70 hours a year... just dealing with the 41 pounds of Junk Mail they recieve each year on average!!!

    • To produce the amount of junk mail in this world requires the use of more than 28 billion gallons of water annually.

You can use a free site like Direct Mail to remove yourself off of thousands of lists that clutter your mailbox or a membership site like 41pounds.org that will reduce your junk mail while donating part of your membership to charity.  Another great site with tips on decreasing your junk mail is The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse
I challenge you to pick an option today and take the steps to reduce your junk mail and your impact on the enviornment so you can celebrate tomorrow knowing you have made a difference!

A peek into my home

One of the statements I most hear when speaking to groups or working with clients is... "Your home must be so organized and amazing."

I decided to give you a little peek into my home and some of the things that we have done to be organized.  We moved into our home a little over a year ago so we are slowly getting things just the way that I would like them to be with custom storage units... but the list of to do projects is still longer than the completed list.

I wanted to show you three of my favorite projects to keep our home organized.

So without further ado... here is my first favorite area in my home.  It is the closet in my entryway where my kids used to dump coats, backpacks, and shoes until we created this custom built unit.

  • Each of the kids has a cubby for their backpacks and personal items.

  • The rack down low allows them to hang up their own coats each day.

  • The 3 plastic tubs on the shelf hold their gloves, hats, scarves, etc... and they are labeled by name.

  • Our coats hang on the door.

  • The shelf above the cubbies is where my husband can put the contents of his pockets each day, his tool belt, his hats, etc...

My next favorite area in my home are the custom built bookshelves at the end of one of our hallways.  My husband and resident handyman did these right after we moved in.  I like to break the shelves up by stacking books different directions and mixing them with pictures to avoid overstuffing the bookshelves.

This is a closet that I cleared out to make room for storing craft supplies, kids homework boxes, and school paper storage.  The crates on the shelf are where I store all of the kids papers that I want to save each year from school filed away by grade.

Hope you enjoyed this little sneak peek into my home... I will share more with you in upcoming weeks and posts.

Clearing out my closet

At the beginning of this year I made an announcement to my family... this WAS the year that I was going to get back into shape and shed the extra pounds.  After weeks of eating healthier and working out regularly... I am happy to announce that I am half way to my goal!

Part of being halfway to my goal means that I am now in pants that are four sizes smaller than I was wearing a few months ago!!!!!

I have been hanging onto pants for a long time in closet because I was using my weight as an excuse...

  • I might need those when I lose weight...
  • I might need those when I gain that weight back...
  • I am afraid that if I get rid of them I will need them again...
This time is different... I am not on a diet... I am on a mission to be a healthier, happier version of myself.  One that is able to keep up with my kids without getting winded.  So...

I cleared out the safety net this week!!!

I sold 42 pairs of pants in wide range of sizes... that I have outgrown and I never intend to get back into!!!!

We all hold onto clutter for a wide variety of reasons; however, one of the most common that I hear is, "I may need that again."  I was guilty of using this excuse to clutter my own closet and in a way I was sending a message to myself that said... "You can't do this... You WILL need these clothes again."

The feeling of boxing those pants up and sending them across the country was one of the most liberating feelings I have had in a while!!!!

What can you clear out today that you are holding onto out of fear??? How is it holding you back in your life????   Let it go and experience the same joy I did this weekend when I cleared out my closet at last.

Friday Five: Five Creative Uses for Coffee Cans

Are you a coffee drinker?  Do you end up with empty coffee cans and are looking for a creative way to reuse or recycle them?

Here are five fun ideas to try:

1.  Homemade Piggy Banks:  Cut a slit in the plastic lid and then let kids decorate the cans with paper, paints, stickers, etc. to personalize their piggy bank.

2.  Create a Rustic DIY Wine Rack:  Remove the bottom of the can with a can opener.  Pick a color that you want your wine rack to be and spray the outside of each can that color.  When they are dry you can use a Super Strong adhesive like Krazy Glue to put them together.

3.  Sick Bucket... Okay I know- but if you have a kid that is prone to car sickness, coffee cans are the perfect answer.  I keep a washcloth and a small bottle of water in the can with the lid on in the car at all times.  When we are on a bad road or a long trip my sickie can access it quickly when needed if we can't stop fast enough.  (The water is for clean up of the bucket until we get home and the washcloth is for clean up for him.)

4.  Clean them out and use them to package baked treats, hot chocolate mix, popcorn, etc... for housewarming gifts, holiday gifts, and more.

5.  Candle holders.  Use a bottle opener end to cut v-shaped slits all over the can to let light out.  Then you can set a candle inside.  They are great to decorate and paint on the outside.

Hope these ideas get you thinking about some creative ways to reuse your coffee cans to help you get more organized and save money.

Finding an Accountability Partner In Organizing

Getting organized is a lot like losing weight- there are many similarities that can be drawn between the two. Both require you to change long held habits and routines and they both work better when you have an accountability partner to help you through the hardest parts of the process.

In losing weight those hard parts are when you don't want to get up early to work out in the cold or you really want a second piece of dessert or a late night snack.... trust me I know. I have been addressing my own personal weight issue and since January have gone down twenty pounds. I realized early that I needed a person to ask me how I am doing and ask me often, a person that I could call when I was feeling particularly tempted to dive into my kid's Easter baskets and pick out the Snickers. I also was able to tell that this person was not only crucial to my success but they had to be a neutral third party... it could not be my husband. No matter how good his intentions were it just did not mean the same thing when he said, "Are you sure you REALLY want to eat THAT?" or "Don't give up Babe... you will get back in those jeans eventually." My girlfriend could say the same thing to me and I would not be offended but when it came from my husband... I was mad.

The same principal is true with organizing... you need a person to ask you questions like:

• Did you sort through a box of stuff this week?

• Did you take a box of donations out of your house this week?

• Remember you are trying to not add more stuff until you take more stuff out... are you sure that is a wise purchase?

Much like my experience with my husband... this person needs to be a neutral third party. When a well meaning spouse or family member asks the same questions it often comes across as condescending and confrontational. A Professional Organizer is skilled at holding clients accountable on these type of issues so I encourage you to either find one in your area to work with or contact us through our website and sign up for a coaching session and accountability program.

No matter what direction you choose to go to find your accountability person to help you get more organized... having that person to hold your hand along the way will make your organization efforts more successful!

A new defination of C.L.U.T.T.E.R?

I am a visual person so I always like to find new ways to visually illistrate for clients the importnace of getting organized and staying that way.  Another product of prolonged bed rest this week was time to think and brainstorm... which led to this little nugget.

A New Defination of Clutter

C:  Can't
L:   Let
U:  Unused
T:  Things
T:  Take
E: Essential
R:  Room

So the next time you are looking around your home trying to decide what is clutter and what is not... ask yourself this simple question... Are these unused items that are taking up essential room?  If the answer is yes then is C.L.U.T.T.E.R and needs to be either organized or cleared out of the space.

Gaining Perspective on the Couch

This weekend was not the weekend that I had planned to have. Friday morning I had noticed a small red circle on my leg as I was getting dressed, I did not really give it much thought. However, as the day went by I began to really not feel well. By mid-afternoon I was running a fever and my leg was throbbing... when I checked the small red circle had grown to the size of a golf ball. A spider bite was diagnosed at the doctor's office and bed rest was ordered for the weekend... something that I do not do well.
I have told you before that I don't have an off button... I have two speeds that I move through my life at: fast and faster. I am always on the move trying to get projects done and kids were they need to be so being forced to sit and rest was not appreciated.

Determined to be productive despite the doctor's orders I remembered the advice that I have given to countless clients that have struggled through illness and injury. Find the items on your to do list that you can still check off that do not require a great deal of energy or effort. I pulled out my personal to do tracker and my business to do tracker. and began reviewing the items that I could still accomplish without the ability to walk around.

In total during three days of "couch time" I was able to check off 15 items from my to do trackers. Most of these were simple projects that I simply had not taken the time to do earlier, a few were larger projects that required some focus and attention that I was able to give without many interruptions. One of the projects I was able to check off of my list was listing a new product called Special Needs to do tracker which breaks your to do list up between "Good Days" and "Not so Good Days". You can download this list for only 99 cents and save it to your computer and print copies off as you need them.

You cannot plan for everything... life is going to throw you curve balls. Yours may not be a spider bite and bed rest or a chronic illness, but it may be something that for a short time throws you off of your game. Part of being organized is being prepared and being flexible. Whichever to do tracker that you choose to use they are a great way to remain flexible no matter what and more importantly you will still be able to be productive.

The Knots tell a Story

Recently I treated myself to a VERY rare treat... I had a one hour massage and it was heavenly! I have been working hard to conquer my weight goals this year and this was my reward to myself for my first ten pounds that I had worked off the old fashioned way.

I often joke with my husband that God left something out when he made me... an off switch for my brain. I can be in the most relaxing of situations (case in point this amazing massage) and while my body may be relaxed... my brain is still flying at 100 MPH. I was laying there thinking about clients, and speaking appearances I needed to prep for- along with fifty other random thoughts. Until my mind settled on this thought I wanted to share with you...

As I lay there and this woman was trying to work out the numerous knots that I had amassed in my shoulders from working out on top of my "not so stressful" daily life it was a little painful. There were moments of genuine pain that made me question for a moment if this treat was really a treat at all or a torture session disguised with scented candles, soft music, and warm sheets. As I lay there biting my tongue in pain I could not help but think of how this experience for me is like the experience that so many of my clients have with their clutter. ( I know I can make an organizing analogy out of anything.)

So many people spend great lengths of time accumulating things and turning a blind eye to things that it becomes a glaring blind spot in their life. Just like the knots in my shoulders... I knew they were there but I had gotten used to living with them so on a daily basis it did not bother me too much. It was not until that woman began pressing on my blind spots that I noticed them and had to face them. With many people who struggle with chronic disorganization there comes a point where someone or something begins to apply pressure to that blind spot, making the person realize it is finally time to deal with the issue.

Facing clutter and making choices to change your habits is not easy, in some cases it can be painful. As I lay on that table in pain while my knots were being worked out it would have been easy to say stop or don't do it so hard... but then I would not have gotten to experience the most amazing, relaxing feeling I have had in a long time... the fact that when she was done I felt like a new woman. I felt lighter and my body (including my shoulders) felt like I could run for days!

Such is the reward of finally tackling your blind spots in your home and your life... it may be a painful process that hurts to go through - but the rewards are great and the feeling when you are done is amazing!!! It is well worth applying the pressure now to get rid of the knots in your life so you can experience knot free living at it's finest... a home and a life that you can relax and enjoy.

Use your Hangers to help you Purge your Closet

As Al Roker would say, "Here in My Neck of the Woods" the weather is finally warming up and staying warm.  I am planning to spend the upcoming weekend changing the closets in my house from Winter to Spring clothing.

I always encourage clients to purge clothing out as they do this task. If something no longer fits properly, is no longer in style, or you simply know you will not wear it again this season... PURGE it out of your closet and make room for clothes that you will wear.

Here is a little trick to use after your purging to make sure that you are only keeping the clothes that you are going to be wearing...

The Hanger Trick
When you hang your spring clothes up- make sure that all of your hangers face the same direction.  As you wear an item and re-hang it in your closet--flip the hanger around the opposite direction.  Within a few weeks it will be obvious what items you are wearing most of the time.  This also gives you a great perspective to go through and do a second purging of items whose hangers are still facing the right way.

Gut Check

Okay here is a question that I encourage you to spend some time thinking about in the next few days... How do you feel when you walk into your home?

Do you feel relaxed, calm, and peaceful? Is your home your sanctuary or your "happy place"?

If not... have you stopped to consider why not?
If you walk into your home or a room in your home and you are immediately bombarded with the sight of clutter it can have a SEVERE impact on how you feel about your home. It can also lead to stress, health issues, marriage issues, and other problems.

I have seen people that spend large amounts of time and money just to avoid having to come home and face the clutter that lurks behind the front door... if you can relate to this feeling then I challenge you this week to make a different choice this week.

Choose to spend the time and money ON your home... conquering the clutter so that you can once again enjoy your home as the peaceful place it should be instead of running from it. The time for change is now... remember the longest journey begins with a single step... make that step be one that takes you through the door instead of away from it.

A personal Friday Five

I hope that you will excuse this slight divergence from our normal Friday Five as I share a personal story about today with you.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day and I am wearing light blue. I have always been a big supporter of this important cause but it takes on a new, personal meaning for me this year. Only a few short months ago my 8 year old son was diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorders, specifically Aspergers. I wear blue today for him.

Since he was young I always knew that something was... different. (It's hard to find a term to use there.) His anxiety level was through the roof all the time and he was a very structured child who could not handle any changes that he was not notified ahead of time. Any degree of spontaneity in our lives was washed away to prevent melt downs and panic attacks.

The diagnosis a month ago did not surprise me but it still left me a little numb for a few days. After years of seeing doctor after doctor only to have them say they are not sure what it was... enduring tests, scans, and blood work to rule other things out... a name was a blessing in disguise. A name has given us power over this invisible force that has been in control of much of our lives, it has allowed us to get education, treatment, support, and peace of mind that we had been lacking before.

Today is also an important day in my home because it is Good Friday and the beginning of Easter weekend. As professing Christians we know that it is because of this weekend that we have a hope and a future... it is for this same reason that I know that God has a special and unique plan in mind just for my son and he was PERFECTLY created to fit that plan.

I do not claim to know it all when it comes to this new force in our life. I am learning all I can about Aspergers and the different ways that we can incooperate it into our lives. However, I have learned five things that seem to really help my son cope... and they all involve organization and routine.

1. He wants to know the plan. All kids thrive on structure but I am learning that kids on the spectrum are especially fond of it. I make a point to tell the entire family each morning what our game plan is for the day and I try very hard to stick to that plan.

2. He wants everything to have a home. Homeless items cause clutter and clutter stresses my son out. (He is his mother's son after all). I have seen this be especially true of his belongings, he wants to be able to find what he wants when he wants it, if he can't he gets very anxious and upset. We have created a place for everything in his room.

3. He is very visual. If he can't see something than it does not exist so I use clear tubs to organize his room and he has a table where he is allowed to spread things out.... it is currently full of pieces to a disassemble VCR that he has been taking apart a little at a time. I recognize his organizing style and try to accommodate it versus fight it.

4. He gets anxious when we are in a loud room or a busy place. I have learned to pack him quite activities that will refocus his attention when we have to be in a place like this. I keep this "quiet bag" in the car at all times so I can grasp it anytime he needs it.
5. He struggles with the concept of time. Instead of telling him that he has only five min. to pick up I play two songs on the CD player and let him know that this equals about five min of time. I try to use cues like this often instead of ONLY telling him time amounts so that he is building a realistic view of time instead of a more abstract one.

Today I am celebrating World Autism Awareness day for my son, my nephew, and the millions of other children that are also affected with this condition. These kids are amazing, unique, and unbelievably talented and I am honored to have such a special kid in my house! He challenges me everyday to be a better mom and a better organizer by making me think outside the box on a regular basis.

The Junk Drawer

Every kitchen has one, whether we want to openly admit to it or not, the junk drawer is as much a kitchen staple as a can opener. For many of us there is something comforting about having a drawer where it is acceptable to stash all the bits and pieces of our life that simply do not seem to fit into any other category or place.

I have worked with many clients who have been brave enough to show me their junk drawer’s and I can tell you there is no limit to the things that find a resting place in this catchall. I have seen old pictures, birthday candles, old medication bottles, various pieces of broken or lost toys, notes written on scrap paper, a bag of baby teeth (yes I did just say a bag of baby teeth), and much more!

I understand the need for a miscellaneous category in your home and I even can see the convenience of having that mismatched grouping in your kitchen within easy reach. However, I cannot imagine that a drawer that is so crammed with STUFF that you can’t see or tell what is in it can be helpful. I think each of us needs to take a quick reality check on the junk drawer(s) in our homes by asking ourselves these three simple questions:

1. When was the last time that I looked in that drawer?

2. When was the last time that I looked in that drawer and found what I was looking for?

3. Is there a better way to set up this drawer to make it more functional?

The answer to the third question is “YES, There is a better way to set up this drawer and make it more functional.” I am going to give you ten quick steps to making over your junk drawer.

1. Empty the contents of the drawer out onto the kitchen counter or table.

2. Sort the items into these eight categories

a. Trash

b. Coupons and Take out Menus

c. Writing Utensils

d. Batteries

e. Lost pieces

f. Notepads

g. Things that belong somewhere else in the house

h. Important papers/manuals

3. Take all of the Trash and throw it away

4. Take all of the carry out or delivery food coupons and paper clip them together. (For bonus points you can arrange them in order with the quickest to expire on top.) Store them in a file folder with your takeout menus on the bottom of the drawer.

The grocery and household items coupons need to be kept in your purse or car so that they will get used when you are at the store… they are not doing you any good in the drawer.

5. A drawer separator is great in your junk drawer, fill one section with pens and once it is full stop adding pens! There is no need to keep 100 ink pens and pencils in a drawer or in a cup! If you have more than you need consider donating some to a daycare, a teacher, a college dorm, etc… share the wealth! When you can buy a pack of 10 pens for a dollar why do we all feel the need to keep several hundred on hand at any given time?

6. It is recommended that most types of household batteries can be stored in the refrigerator and it will help preserve them better. I would recommend that you get a few small plastic food storage boxes and label them the various sizes of batteries and keep them in the back of your fridge. Old butter containers that have been washed out are great for this.

7. Ahhh, the lost pieces of toys and games… that clog thousands of junk drawers across this planet. I recommend that you take a plastic shoe box storage container and label it “Lost and Found Box”. Then put all of these miscellaneous pieces in this box and store it with your board games. Once a month or so, take the box out and sort through it, putting away pieces with the right game, puzzle, or toy. If you discover that the game, toy, or puzzle is broken or no longer in the house… throw away the extra pieces! This will also help if one of the kids is trying to finish a puzzle on their own and they are missing a piece… they will know where to look first!

8. One notepad should sit in your drawer next to the pens or stuck to your fridge to write down quick notes or phone messages. There is no need for 15 or 20 of them in the kitchen. If you want to go green and save some trees… consider recycling old notepads and replacing them with a dry erase board in your kitchen! Extra notepads can be dontated like the pens.

9. If it belongs somewhere else in your home and was shoved into the drawer in a rush clean up one day… now is your chance to give it a proper homecoming.

10. Contrary to what many of us imagine… our junk drawer is not the most secure or efficient method of filing important papers. I have seen everything from birth certificates, social security cards, check books, and even loan paperwork shoved into the bottom of kitchen drawers. If you have these papers in your junk drawer I am telling you, “It is time to file them away in a better system.” (To be covered in later challenge).

Now when you open it you should see a drawer organizer with pens, a notepad, and takeout menus and coupons in a file folder under the organizer. Here are a few more acceptable items to keep in your new and improved junk drawer:

• A flashlight

• A lighter or matches

• A small tube of super glue

• A roll of tape

• A small pin cousin with straight pens and safety pins

If you have followed these simple steps, the next time that you open this drawer in your kitchen, I believe you will find what you need faster and easier! The junk drawer may be a small victory in a bigger war… but take time to savor winning the small battles because often the can cost us the most time lost in our day!
